A faster package will not fix your ping
Two things that affect your ping, and one for streamers.
Play on a nearby server
Ping is the time for data to reach a game server and return. A nearby server and a clear route can matter more than the fastest download package.
Plug in with a cable
Use a wired connection where possible. Congestion, Wi-Fi interference and the route to the game server can all contribute to lag.
Check the upload speed
Upload matters if you stream your gameplay, upload clips or send big files, so check each package.
More on home fibre, or fixed LTE and 5G if fibre has not reached your street.
Fibre or 5G for gaming?
Start with fibre for a fixed gaming setup. Fixed 5G is the alternative where fibre isn't available. Ping is the time for data to reach a game server and return, so a nearby server, a wired connection and a clear route can matter more than the fastest download package.
| What matters | Home fibre | Fixed 5G |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | A fibre line to your property | A router connected to a mobile network |
| Gaming performance | Not affected by mobile signal; routing and Wi-Fi still matter | Affected by signal strength, router placement and mobile demand |
| Getting connected | Existing line activation or a fibre installation | Compatible router, coverage and activation |
| What to compare | Download/upload speed, monthly price and installation charges | Package speed, usage terms, router cost and coverage |

What is Cool Fibre?
Cool Fibre is the gaming division of Cool Ideas, an Afrihost Group company. Enter your address and Cool Ideas shows the fibre or 5G you can get.
How do I win the monthly prize?
Play all three games: Cool Six, Ping Sniper and Beat the Lag. Use the same email on each and save each score. The highest total score in the month wins. For November 2026 the prize is 2 rAge Nation tickets and a Stealth Series wireless gaming headset. Every month after that, the prize is 6 months of free internet. No purchase necessary. The draw terms are on the Promotions page.
Is fibre or 5G better for gaming?
Start with fibre. It is not affected by mobile signal. Fixed 5G is the alternative where fibre is unavailable. Your ping still depends on the game server, routing, congestion and your home network.
How much does home internet cost?
Fibre starts at R444/month on the MetroFibre 30Mbps promotion, on new installations. Promo price for new customers. Check the ongoing price before you order. Openserve 1Gbps is R1,699/month in select areas. MTN 5G starts at R199/month, router excluded. Your address decides which offers you can get. Prices as listed by Cool Ideas.
Does uncapped mean guaranteed speed?
No. Uncapped describes the data allowance, not a guaranteed speed or ping. Cool Ideas describes its home fibre as uncapped, unshaped and unthrottled. Fixed wireless packages have their own speed and usage terms, which you should check separately.
Can I use fibre during a power cut?
You need backup power for both your router and fibre terminal. Your fibre network also needs working backup power. A UPS can help, but it cannot guarantee service during a network outage.
What should I check before switching?
Check coverage at your address, the ongoing monthly price, installation and router charges, and cancellation notice with your current provider. Confirm the new connection date before cancelling your existing service.
